I like the way he's grouped links together in paragraphs with quotes. It's good see the different ways people approach the carnival and it's always good.

Getting back into gear

We've had a couple of people express interest in hosting a Carnival of Socialism so we're going to give it shot getting the old girl back up and running.

As part of that I've set up a Carnival of Socialism discussion group open to all leftwing *bloggers* with the aim of a) getting the Carnival back up and running and b) bringing the socialist blog-o-sphere closer together.

If you'd like to join send me your email and blog address and I'll add you to the list. Once I've worked out how it's done I'll add something to the site so people can sign themselves up without having to go through me.

I particularly like his opener;

I had to think a bit before accepting the task because the SPGB is, of course, well known for its clause 7 and views that stand in direct contrast to most left politics, such as: workers shouldn't vote Labour; leninism isn't a development of marxism; state ownership is state capitalism; and Russia et al did not establish socialism nor were/are they "degenerate workers' states". However, I did promise PhilBC that I would refrain from calling everybody else a bunch of non-socialist reformists. So I shalln't!

News of the Carnival's demise are a bit premiture

There was a bit of a lack of steam problem for a moment there at the end of last year - as with many things in life the Carnival seems to go effortlessly when it has momentum but when it starts to falter it can very easily break down.

All suggestions on rectifying that problem will be gratefully received!

Anyway, it's a new year and time to see if we can get the Carnival back on its feet. That means we need volunteers. I'm going to wipe the diary clean and start again. If you're interested in hosting an edition of the Carnival of Socialism, God bless you, and leave a comment below saying what date you'd like, where you blog and, if you want to have a theme, it would be a good idea to run it past us first too.

Getting slightly more organised

Socialism relies on solidarity and team work and here at the Carnival we've been trying to think of ways to make it easier for people to support those who are hosting each edition. We'd really like to see it become easier to take part and easier to promote the best left posts from the blogosphere.

So we've set up two rise up lists.

First we have c-of-s-submit@lists.riseup.net. The editors of the Carnival and whoever is hosting the next edition will be subscribed to this so you can use the same e-mail address all year round to submit your favourite posts to. This will also allow the editorial team to include the current host in their discussions and allow us to be a bit more flexible.

If you want to contact the Carnival from now on this is the address to use.

Second we have c-of-s-announce@lists.riseup.net which we'll use for a fortnightly update to let you know when each Carnival is published and where the next one will be. This should also allow us to send out any announcements and updates about what's going down.

The 25th Carnival of Socialism is out now over at Cruella's, and she's done an absolutely fantastic job.

"There's no special theme to the carnival other than "political stuff from the last two weeks that I'm interested in and hopefully you are too"." Which is one of my favourite flavours of Carnival.

We've got blog posts from all over the world, on all kinds of subjects and a discussions sparked up less than 24 hours after the Carnival was posted - good job Kate.

The next Carnival will be over at A Very Public Sociologist on the 8th August and he's taking the theme of how the left uses the net to campaign. "I would [also] like to hear other comrades on why they blog, the relationship between blogs and Leninist groupings, the future of left blogging, etc."

Let's get this show back on the road

We've had a brief pre-summer lull it seems - so it would be good to get the Carnival of Socialism back into action.

The excellent Cruella has volunteered for the next edition (and I've got her down provisionally for the 25th July). It would be good if we could have at least another couple of bloggers who've not taken part recently to step forward for the challenge too.

It could not be easier to put yourself forwards for the carnival - all you need is to be a socialist with a blog and an open mind so we get a broad sweep, rather than a view from just one corner of the left-o-sphere.

It's also true that the more support we give to those hosting the Carnival a) the better it will be and b) the easier it is to host - which are both good things I hope.

Mayday Carnival

Mayday greetings to the workers of the world! We have a short mayday-themed carnival to celebrate.

First up, The World Socialist Party (US) has prepared a history of Mayday - Mayday 2008 is the 122nd anniversary of the American General Strike of 1886. Snowball, however, links to a piece by Rosa Luxembourg which dates Mayday back to 1856. Anyone wanting to resolve this historical problem should do so in the comments.

At the Socialist Unity Blog, Louise writes about Workers' Memorial Day (April 28th) and notes some shocking statistics on work-related injury.

Penny Red writes a Mayday article on feminism, class and abortion, arguing that feminism is beginning to rediscover its socialist roots.

In America, May 1st is the National Day of Prayer - or the National Day of Reason, according to which camp you belong to. Better to ignore both and celebrate Mayday as a worker's day!

Finally, around the UK there are elections today - most importantly those for Mayor of London. Stroppyblog has a pessimistic/realistic take, while The F Word simply says "Vote!".

The 22nd Carnival of Socialism has been hosted by the Socialist Unity Blog, and is divided into sections on feminism and China. Feminism is a fundamental left issue, and it is worth noting that there is an excellent Carnival of Feminism for further reading. Meanwhile, as the world's media begins looking for China stories in advance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, they could do worse than begin at Andy's selection of blog posts on Tibet, human rights and central planning in China.

The 21st Carnival of Socialism is now up over at the Mustard Seed.

This edition of the Carnival "focuses on South Asian politics as well as South Asian socialist and communist movements", and very interesting it is too.

It's always good to see the carnival stretching into new areas and new blogs, I'm always particularly happy to see blogs from beyond the UK and US - let's hope this trend continues. Over the last few issues the bar has been set very high.

The twentieth Carnival of Socialism has gone live over at Leftwing Criminologist with a feast of posts around themes of crime, deviance and disorder.

He points out that issues around crime are seen as the natural territory of the right and he feels that the left needs to put across its analysis on crime more vocally. That journey starts here.

"In this Carnival, we'll look at various aspects of crime from how socialists should approach crime, to criticising capitalist methods of tackling crime to crime in the third world."

This letter has appeared in the Weekly Worker an august publication of the British left.

Carnival time

The Carnival of Socialism is an online, fortnightly summary of the best of what’s happening in the leftwing ‘blogosphere’. Each edition is hosted by a different socialist blogger with assistance from those who’ve spotted interesting posts and discussions.

It was relaunched earlier this year and is quickly picking up momentum - but we want to make sure that it continues to bring in new bloggers from different parts of the left and different parts of the world. Even if it’s difficult for the left to unite in meatspace sometimes, it can be a little easier to reach consensus online that we at least need to talk to one another, which provides an opportunity for socialists to listen and learn from what we all have to say.

The discussion is unmediated by any central committee or editorial board, so, whilst the positions are often a little fixed, the debate is at least more direct and fruitful. Disagreements can be sharp, of course - the web is notorious for its heated exchanges - but the Carnival has been useful in highlighting the fact that we do have shared goals in common and, even when someone comes from a very different tradition, they can still have interesting things to say. As a contribution to bringing the left into discussion with each other we’ve found blogging circles and the Carnival of Socialism a helpful, if often overlooked, tool.

At its best the Carnival celebrates the diversity and range of the left - but we want to make sure that everyone who can be represented is. It only works, however, by bloggers writing and readers recommending good posts. If you want to take part, check out our website and then email jimjepps@hotmail.com.

The Carnival of Socialism is getting back on track due to popular demand and a regrettable failure of capitalism to overthrow itself. John has been joined as editor by Jim and Dave to make a small but perfectly formed team which will be taking the Carnival forward into 2008.

You'll see in the right hand column a number of dates scheduled for carnivals to take place, as follows;

Feb 1st The Daily (Maybe)

Feb 29th Jack Ray
March 13th Power to the people
March 27th
April 10th

We want lefty bloggers to take the bit between their teeth and sign up for one of these dates as soon as possible so we can get a momentum going. To sign yourself up simply leave your blog address and the date you'd like to take on in the comments box below and we'll get back to you asap.

Last year we had some themed carnivals and we may well go back to that at some point but for now we're just looking for fortnightly round ups of the weird and wonderful blog entries from the socialist blogosphere. We're sure that bloggers will want to highlight their regular reads but we also hope that the carnival will encourage people to expand their reading range and dip into issues they don't often think about. We'd like to see carnivals that push the boundaries, that go beyond the same old faces as well as revisit these old familiar friends.

Something else we'll be considering later on in the year is a redesign for the site - expanding its blog links as well as linking to left field publications on the net, hopefully making the site a useful first port of call when seeking out the net left. All suggestions for the site - be they blogs, publications, rss feeds or whatever will be gladly received - this relaunch is a great opportunity to ensure we've linked to your blog and those reads you find unmissable.

The beauty of the blogosphere, and carnivals in particular, is that they provide an opportunity to celebrate the diversity in our movement as well as those things that unite us. We hope that we'll help provoke debate, discussion, sometimes even argument - but ultimately we want to help bring the left together in order to be better able to promote a socialist agenda in the twenty first century.

But, arguably, there is one angle he missed out.

The Red Mantis has been unearthing some great posts for this 9th Carnival of Socialism! The topics range from jocular depictions of the right-wing lexicon to Marxist interpretations of the recent war in Lebanon. Unmissable!

Carnival number 10 will be at my home blog, but this round will feature a twist. Submissions should be the best of Socialist blogging - past or present, classic or written explicitly for the Carnival - on the topic of the relationship between Socialism and religion.

After Carnival 10 I would like some other blogger to perform this role for the next ten issues - in the name of freshness, new ideas and interest, it is important that the Carnival moves on regularly.

Carnival Service Announcement

Following the Summer "silly season", with little politics going on and another war just ended, the Carnival is preparing to get back on track. So, a round-up of the present situation:

Simon at The Fluffy Economist is taking an active role in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and so fell beneath our radars. He will host a Carnival later in the year.

Dave of Dave's Part has agreed to fill his shoes and host Carnival #8, which will fall on the 9th of September.
